Priming

Understanding and avoiding priming issues

Priming is a necessary step to operate centrifugal pumps.

Failing to perform proper priming will result in dry running and poor pump performance. Priming problems can be prevented by properly designing the hydraulic setup. When the guidelines cannot be strictly followed, it is still possible to operate the system by actively priming the pump. Certain processes can cause loss of priming, and therefore require careful planning of the hydraulic loop and specific technical solutions.

In this lesson you will learn…

  • …why priming is important
  • …how priming works in other pump technologies
  • …how to prevent priming issues
  • …how to actively prime a pump
  • …how to avoid loss of priming
