Cavitation and NPSH

Understanding and avoiding the cavitation phenomenon

An incorrect pump installation can lead to cavitation (a detrimental and unstable working point). To help users avoid it, pump manufacturers provide the NPSHr values at various working points. NPSHr is the pressure at the inlet of the pump required to avoid cavitation. The system provides a certain amount of pressure at the inlet, called NPSHa, which can be compared against NPSHr to determine the cavitation risk.

In this lesson, you will learn…

  • …what is cavitation
  • …what is NPSHr
  • …what is NPSHa
  • …how to use NPSHr and NPSHa to minimize the risk of cavitation
